Shri Studio Owner, Director and Vinyasa Yoga Teacher

Alison
has been a registered yoga instructor (RYT 200) with the National Yoga Alliance since 2006.  She received her certification through Tonya Zaloumis at Soma Yoga in Newport, RI, and has been studying with various teachers in Providence and New York City ever since.

Alison's vinyasa classes are all about flow and balance, in which she guides her students through interpretations of traditional ashtanga sequences, set to an ever-changing array of music.  LOTS of Music!!! In Urban Bhakti Groove, Alison leads students through classical sanskrit chants in addition to a deeper, physical flow.  In all of Alison's classes, expect to SWEAT and learn something new - Alison deliberately avoids routine.

Alison is well known to help her students identify with and to push their own energetic and physical edges with a deliberate emphasis on the breath, and an acknowledgment of the true self, and the ability to have fun in the lighter (and there can be many) moments during a practice.

Alison has been looking for a place in New England where yoga is available to practitioners of all levels and socio-economic backgrounds.  Once she found this space and transformed it, her concept of "Urban Revitalization Yoga" became a reality.

Alison is convinced Shri Studio can serve as a model for other cities and communities in need of some attention and compassion.  Since opening Shri's doors, the studio has expanded to offer yoga classes in schools, as part of the Shri Studio School Project, and in community centers too. Alison's vision has always been to open Shri as a "home base" for urban outreach work, and now she's working towards forming a formal foundation to support all this work with the studio's non-profit partners.

Before Shri, Alison has taught at Soma Yoga in Newport, CORE in Providence, and she's taught privates and led community classes in her immediate neighborhood.  Now, Alison travels to New York City and studies primarily at Jivamukti Yoga School.  In New England, Alison studies at Kripalu and at Harvard University where she is completing a second masters degree in literature, with her thesis focused on Henry David Thoreau, the first American Yogi.
